Hip Hop Beats Make the Song but not the Rapper
August 18th, 2011 | Posted by BeatsMonster

How many times have hot rap beats caught your attention and got you to listen to a song, and even helped make you like the song?  The answer to this question is probably a lot.  But the truth of the matter remains that even if you are able to capture an audience for your song with a hot beat the only way you can keep an audience listening to your music is by offering substance outside the beats.

If you’re a rapper a hot rap beat will only keep people interested in you for so long.  You’ve also got to have some substance behind your skills.  And as far as any young rapper is concerned your primary focus should be on acquiring rap beats that you can work with and in learning how to work on any type of rap beats.

Even though a hot hip hop beat will get people to bob their heads and take notice of you, if you can’t execute the rap over the beat, then you can’t really claim to have any skills.  And that’s really the point.  You’ve got to have the skills to back up that hot rap beat.  So if you do find yourself behind a sick beat, you won’t pale in comparison to it.  It’s damn hard to be a rapper and make a living at it.  And just because ITunes has opened the way for every artist to put their music on display and for sale doesn’t mean that you can make anything out of it.

At this moment the market for rap music is actually saturated with amateurs hoping to get some recognition on the internet.  The problem with this is that hope won’t pay the rent.  If your skills are not absolutely top notch then you’re not going to make it anywhere.  In an arena where there are so many contestants you have to be able to take on all comers.  What this means in practice is that your flow not only has to be the sickest, but your taste in rap beats also has to be on point.

There is also a third aspect of the creation of a song and persona that most people won’t or just don’t discuss, and that is that your rap style has to compliment the beat you’re working on.  It’s not just that a nice flow and hot rap beat necessarily will make a great song.  The most important feature is the way that rapper meshes with rap beat.  And if this part of it is not actually there, then what you have is a slipshod song.

A rap song is a work of art.  And whether or not you believe this last statement, you are still responsible for crafting a piece of music that people can listen to again and again.  In that way the song you make not only can’t have any errors but it also must show the perfect combination of rapper and rap beat.
